Hike Description
​
About a 40-minute drive from the pick-up point, having just traveled 292m below the fjord from Stavanger. we reach the parking area. Once at the hike's starting point, we conduct an equipment check, making any necessary adjustments. Following this, a brief safety briefing is provided, covering trail information, expected conditions, and useful hiking tips before embarking on today's exciting adventure!
The initial part of the hike follows a cart track to Dalestemmen, a serene lake where we traverse the dam. Beyond the lake, we embark on a slight ascent, which, despite being considered flat by many, contains some very soft watery sections og marshes, emphasizing the importance of wearing ankle-high hiking boots.
Progressing towards the mountain's summit, we traverse some of the last coastal heaths. These heaths, shaped through generations by burning, grazing, and heather cutting, offer a mix of open landscapes, dense coniferous forests, and varied vegetation. While Rennesøy likely underwent deforestation and was covered in heather 4000 years ago, much of the heathlands have been transformed into grassy pastures over the last 30 years. Along the route, you'll encounter some of the characteristic fences with stone posts (spiked stones) that add to the area's charm.
Exiting the forest, the landscape unfolds, bringing us closer to The Island Horn. Before ascending to the summit, we choose one of the designated resting spots (as the picture above), savoring a drink and snack while enjoying the already acquired panoramic views.
The final ascent to the top is often windy due to its exposed location in Boknafjorden. However, the positive side is the phenomenal, unparalleled 360-degree view. From Haugalandet and Karmøy in the north to the depths of Ryfylke and southward to Jæren, the perspective from the 234-meter-high summit is breathtaking. Looking out, you'll see well-maintained farms, and on the northern side, the heaths gracefully curve.

The return journey initially leads through dense coniferous forest, creating a mysterious atmosphere, especially on overcast days. As we emerge into open landscapes, an established gravel road guides us for a significant portion of the return. The final leg towards the car retraces the same type of cultural landscape we started with, featuring a well-maintained trail with planks over the wettest areas.
Weekday Hike

Embarking on a weekend day hike provides us with the luxury of abundant time, allowing us to relish every nuance of the journey. Although the trail replicates that of our weekday hike, the extended duration and prolonged breaks promise to elevate the overall experience even further :)
Our leisurely pace grants us the freedom to immerse ourselves in the enchanting surroundings, appreciating the smallest details along the way. We'll carve out ample moments for making a campfire, make some food, and the pursuit of additional activities like fishing and swimming, should the interest and opportunities present themselves. So, lace up your hiking boots, embrace the unhurried rhythm, and let's make the most of this weekend adventure!

We descend into the summit and head for the lower area. Here, we find a nice spot to take a longer break, lighting a campfire and preparing some food.
We have now returned to the car, tired but filled with impressions from today's hike.
Regrettably, our time together has come to an end as we arrive back at the drop-off point. We say our goodbyes and hope to meet again.
