Pulpit Rock, shaped by nature over 10,000 years ago, is Norway’s most iconic natural attraction, drawing more than 350,000 visitors each year. Rising dramatically above the fjord, this breathtaking mountain plateau offers unrivaled panoramic views.

Beyond the spectacular summit, the hike itself is an adventure through western Norway’s lush landscapes. The trail winds through dense forests, rugged terrain, and swampy lowlands, with several scenic viewpoints along the way. A highlight of the route is the expertly crafted stone steps, built by Nepalese Sherpas, seamlessly blending into the natural surroundings.

Please be aware that this hike can become extremely crowded, especially during the peak summer months from June to August. To enhance your experience and avoid the largest crowds, we recommend starting the hike after 16:00 on weekdays or before 09:00 on weekends.

​

That said, Pulpit Rock is one of Norway’s most famous hikes, and a high number of visitors is to be expected. To make the most of your adventure, we encourage you to be mentally prepared for the possibility of hiking in a queue at times.

Hike Description​

After a scenic 40-minute drive from the pick-up point—having just traveled 292 meters beneath the fjord from Stavanger—we arrive at the parking area. At the trailhead, we conduct an equipment check, making any necessary adjustments. A brief safety briefing follows, covering trail details, expected conditions, and essential hiking tips before setting off on today's adventure.

The trail presents a diverse mix of terrain, including steep gravel inclines, boulder scrambling, rock staircases, wooden pathways over marshlands, and winding forest trails. After approximately 2 hours of hiking, we reach Pulpit Rock, a spectacular 25 x 25-meter plateau towering 604 meters above the legendary Lysefjord. Here, we pause to take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the fjord stretching out below.

We prepare a meal, enjoy a warm drink, and take in the stunning views. The peaceful surroundings, with the dramatic fjord stretching out below, provide the perfect setting to relax and recharge.

After soaking in the scenery and resting for a while, we begin our return journey along the same trail. As we descend, we experience the landscape from a new perspective, with shifting light and fresh vantage points revealing details we might have missed on the way up. Along the way, we take time to enjoy the tranquility of the wilderness, listening to the sounds of nature and capturing any last photos before we complete our adventure.
